Campus surplus-food discovery platform that connects leftover event food with hungry students.

UniBytes

The Story Behind This Project

UniBytes came from a frustrating pattern I kept noticing on campus. I saw tons of perfectly good food going to waste after events while students were literally looking for anything else but dining hall food.

So I built UniBytes to bridge that gap. The platform connects surplus food from campus events with students who want it, reducing waste and helping the community at the same time. It's a win for event organizers who don't want to throw away food, and a win for students who get free meals.

How It Works

  • Browse the map to find surplus food events happening around campus in real-time
  • Claim your portion with just a few clicks
  • Head to the location to pick up your free meal

Open Source

UniBytes is fully open source. I genuinely encourage you to clone the repo and adapt it for your own college campus or school. The codebase is designed to be easily customizable for different institutions. Additionally, if any BU students would like to contribute to this I would love to work with you.

If you find the project useful or just think it's cool, I'd deeply appreciate a star on GitHub. Check out the live site to see it in action.
